Portimonense are proudly sitting only one point behind joint second division leaders Moreirense and Porto B following their latest 2-0 victory over Sporting B.
The Lisbonites, boasting the likes of Gerson Magrão, keeper Marcelo Boeck, Welder, Piris and Cisse, more usually to be found in the club’s Superliga side, in their starting line-up, dominated large parts of the first half without succeeding in breaking down the Algarveans’ defence.
A more determined home 11 emerged from the tunnel after the interval, and following a shot against the bar from Mica captain Ricardo Pessoa put Portimonense ahead from the penalty spot following referee Jose Laranjeira’s somewhat questionable dismissal of Sporting’s Ricardo Esgaio for a clearly accidental hand ball.
Now in numerical superiority, Portimão had little further difficulty in taking charge of the game and Ricardo Alves finished with aplomb to establish the final scoreline.
On the back of three successive league victories Portimonense, travelled to Porto to take on now third tier one time Portuguese champions Boavista for their League Cup tie and once more emerged victorious by two goals to one. Next up is an away game at Trofense tomorrow (Saturday) before Penafiel come to visit on Wednesday.Skip Bandele
