Get on your bike!

It is time to dust down your saddle, pump up your tyres and start to prepare to pedal around the Ria Formosa to help raise funds for children in Olhão.

On May 2, the first ACCA charity bike ride is due to take place around the Ria Formosa with funds raised from the day being donated to a new crèche in Olhão, Arca de Noé (Noah’s Ark).

ACCA is an association which supports underprivileged children in the Algarve.

The 50km round trip is open to everyone, with Activity Algarve, partners in the event, providing special practice rides throughout April for those who wish to participate but would like to receive a little training before the big day.

“ACCA is keen to support this crèche as preference will be given to children of the poorest families and to disabled children whose charges will be subsidised by social services,” said Samantha Diamond of ACCA.

The crèche in Olhão, which is being set up by an association of volunteers, already has a purpose built home for the project but 50 local toddlers and babies will be unable to use the facility if it fails to purchase essential equipment.

Samantha Diamond said: “This is just the sort of project that ACCA likes to support. The crèche building has been financed by social services, the local council and bank loans, and there is absolutely no further funding available, so if support cannot be found for equipment it cannot open and it will be a complete waste of effort.”

Organisers hope that funds from the bike ride will be enable ACCA to buy baby changing units, chairs, tables, storage furniture and hygienic disposal units for the crèche.

“We have lots of people showing interest in our bike ride but the more people who take part the more money we can raise and the more equipment we can buy,” said Samantha Diamond.
