Social media reaction to Wolfgang Schauble’s return to ‘Portugal bashing’ was fast and furious on Wednesday, with commentators saying: “Oh, for God’s sakes…” and at least one Portuguese MEP retweeting the echoes of frustration.
Schauble’s new ‘alert’ – similar to others sounded last year that then did the rounds of the international financial pages – centres on Portugal taking care that it does not need to request a second bailout.
Schauble’s antipathy towards Portugal’s anti-austerity government was dubbed “biased” and “uninspired” late last year by prime minister António Costa (click here).
