German tourist drowns at Aljezur’s Bordeira beach

A German tourist, aged around 50, drowned at Bordeira beach in Aljezur on Thursday afternoon.

His family alerted authorities at around 1.30pm after the man, who was swimming in the sea, “disappeared” among the three-metre high waves.

Maritime police, Aljezur firefighters, INEM emergency services, lifeboats and a helicopter were all deployed to find the man, who was spotted around an hour later by the crew of the Amarok lifeboat.

Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the man was rushed in critical condition to Lagos Hospital where his death was declared at around 5pm.

Lagos port captain Conceição Duarte told Correio da Manhã that Bordeira beach is considered “dangerous due to rip currents and strong waves”. The beach is also unsupervised, he warned.
