Two German residents were rescued unharmed from a small inaccessible beach in Portimão on May 17 after they lost control of their boat and crashed against rocks. The beach, ironically known as Praia do Alemão, or German Man’s Beach – official name is Praia do Barranco das Canas – was inaccessible on foot as the tide was high and too dangerous to reach by sea due to the strong waves.
Luckily, a walker on the cliffs witnessed the men’s ordeal and alerted the authorities at around 4pm.
Rescue teams were deployed both by land and sea, but neither could reach the men, aged 65 and 75. The only other option was to call in the fire department and have them rappel down to the men.
They were finally rescued from the beach at around 7.30pm and taken to Portimão Hospital as a precautionary measure.
