Holger Groschopp (piano) and Adele Bitter (cello) are Berliners making a welcome return to the Algarve to play for the Amigos de Música and friends. They will give two recitals at Os Agostos country estate, near Santa Bárbara de Nexe, in May. The first recital on Tuesday, May 14 will feature music by Janáček, Mendelssohn-Barholdy and Martinů. The second recital on Thursday, May 16 will have music by Beethoven, Brahms, Busoni, Duparc and Chopin.
Holger Grosschopp was born in 1964 and initially pursued his music studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in his home town Berlin. He also studied composition with the late Isang Yun and song interpretation with Aribert Reimann and the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the renowned baritone and conductor. He completed his studies with many master classes. Holger has won many prizes including the Brahms Competition for Piano in Hamburg. His extensive solo career has taken him to most European countries, the Middle and Far East and Latin America.
Holger’s repertoire ranges from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven to Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin to Messiaen, Kurtág and Henze, whose Piano Quintet he premiered in Germany. He has made many recordings with German and foreign broadcast and TV stations.
In the Philharmonie Berlin, Holger also plays the organ, harpsichord, the harmonium and the celesta. The celesta is a musical instrument from the percussion family, but it is often included in the keyboard section of an orchestra. The celesta looks like a piano or an oversize music box, and sound is made by keys striking hammers that then strike metal plates that are suspended over resonators. His six CDs by Busoni attained the highest acclaim from audiences and international critics.
Adele Bitter did her early studies in Frankfurt and then continued at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. She studied in Cincinnati with Lee Fiser of the LaSalle Quartet. Adele played in the Ensemble Modern (which is dedicated to performing the music of modern composers) at festivals in Lucerne and Edinburgh.
She was a member of the Orchestra Academy of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. She has since been the First Cello in the Deutsches Symphony-Orchester Berlin.
Adele regularly plays chamber music with piano or organ as well as with a string quartet. She is also active in the field of early music and has completed doctoral studies in historical performance.
Amigos de Música concerts at Os Agostos begin at 7pm sharp. Doors open at 6pm and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be served. There will also be a short interval with refreshments served. Entry donation is €25 per person for guests and non-members.
The Amigos de Música is an international group of around 90 members who stage musical activities by internationally renowned musicians and also sponsor young Portuguese musicians. It is a non-profit organisation and celebrated its 29th anniversary last year.
