German man injured in rock fall

A German man suffered multiple injuries following a rock fall at Olival beach, near Porches, in the Lagoa council on Monday morning.

Contrary to earlier reports which said the victim was British, a spokesman from Faro Hospital told the Algarve Resident that the man is German, aged 53, and has suffered multiple injuries.

“He is in intensive care and will be operated on this afternoon to injuries on his arm and leg,” said the spokesman.

“According to medical examinations carried out so far, his condition is not life-threatening but it raises some concerns.”

The man, who was airlifted to Faro Hospital after he was hit by crumbling rocks at around 10.20am on Monday morning, is reported as being the only victim of this accident.

Emergency teams were called to the scene, including a helicopter to rescue the victim.

Several warning signs alerting visitors of the dangers posed by the nearby cliffs are in place and visible at the entrance to all the smaller beaches in the area, such as Olival and Beijinhos beach and on the cliff tops.
