A General Strike yesterday (Thursday) was expected to affect mainly public sector services in Portugal. Several protests against the government austerity measures and the new labour law, less protective of workers, were scheduled to take place across Portugal but there were no plans for an action in the Algarve by Portugal main workers’ union, CGTP. Union leader Arménio Carlos said that workers willing to lose one day’s pay for absence on strike day would actually be making an investment in the future.
