General strike

PORTUGAL’S LARGEST union, Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses (CGTP), is to organise a general strike on May 30 in protest against government policies that are generating poverty and unemployment.

CGTP secretary general Carvalho da Silva justified the country’s fifth general strike since 1982 on the grounds that the country was “in the grip of a profound economic depression” that government policies were doing nothing to alleviate.
