St Patrick’s Society of the Algarve is gearing up to celebrate Ireland’s national day with a gala dinner on Saturday March 17 at the Holiday Inn in Armação de Pêra.
It is the society’s biggest annual event, with all the traditional music, dancing and craic associated with St Patrick’s Day the world over. In Lisbon, the Irish Association Portugal will be holding a similar event in the Hotel Miragem in Cascais.
A spokesman for the society said: “The Irish have enjoyed close links with Portugal at least since the 15th century. Those links are closer today than ever. Less than 1,000 Irish nationals are registered as living in Portugal but the real figure is probably much higher. The Algarve is one of the most popular holiday destinations for people living in Ireland.”
The St Patrick’s Day celebrations in both the Algarve and Lisbon bring together members of the resident Irish community, but they are open to visitors as well as expatriates and all friends of Ireland regardless of nationality.
The MC and DJ for the evening will be Mike Bristow. A troupe of young Irish dancers will perform after dinner and guests will have the opportunity to dance the night away until well past midnight.
The Algarve celebrations begin with welcome drinks in the bar at 7pm and dinner in the dining room, with its views over the ocean, starts at 7.45pm.
Tickets are priced at €32.50 for members and €35 for non-members. The dining room comfortably accommodates 100 guests but early reservations are recommended and appreciated by the organisers.
