PAUL GASCOIGNE has jetted into Faro Airport to start negotiations with local District League side Algarve United.
The former England star is to discuss a possible role as player-manager for the coming season with owner Corrado Correggi. Now 38, Gascoigne is seen as the ideal figurehead to inspire the ambitious young side to greater heights and has been a regular visitor to the region for the past 16 years.
He spent the weekend inspecting Algarve United’s training complex in Vilamoura as well as the Tavira Stadium where the team’s matches are played.
Advice sought from Portugal experts Sir Bobby Robson and José Mourinho seems to have been positive and the prospective engagement would certainly be more pleasant than Gazza’s last foreign adventure in Outer Mongolia. Latest indications are that the maverick genius will accept the challenge in the sun and take charge of the fledgling club by the end of this week.
