Gay Tourism gets official launch in Portugal on January 11

Gay Tourism in Portugal is about to get its own (official) association.

Variações – Associação de Comércio e Turismo LGBTI brings together gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual and intersexual-friendly tourism-supporting businesses and services.

The initiative is being presented in Lisbon on Monday January 11, in the company of secretary of state for tourism Ana Mendes Godinho and Vítor Costa, the president of the capital’s regional tourist entity.

Named after legendary gay singer songwriter António Variações (who died aged 39 in 1984), the association already comprises over 20 businesses from “north to south of the country, including bars, discos and hotels, as well as touristic routes, performers, agents, digital and design businesses, fashion and clothing labels, consultants and lawyers”, reports tabloid Correio da Manhã.

One of Variações’ priorities will be the campaign “Proudly Portugal”, organised to “better structure” this new niche market and take it to international LGBTI events.

Says CM, Variações will be working at putting Portugal’s name forward for the Europride 2021 festival which “could attract more than half a million people” to whichever host city is chosen.
