Gay Catholics criticise Portuguese Church

Rumos Novos, an association for gay Catholics, has criticised the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (PEC) for what it calls its “aggressiveness” towards same-sex marriages.

PEC’s latest pastoral letter treads the traditional Catholic line, describing gay unions as “sinful”.

Rumos Novos believes the message is designed to sway Portuguese Catholics at a time when the Vatican is conducting a survey on same-sex marriages as Pope Francis continues to open the Catholic Church up to new ideas.

The association claims PEC’s letter “is being used to create stigmas instead of promoting love and acceptance” and that the entity representing the Portuguese Church is isolating itself from the future of society – the same way it did with birth control which, Rumos Novos adds, the vast majority of Catholics now use.
