Garrão beach businesses  fight demolition

Plans to demolish beach bars and restaurants at Praia do Garrão near Vale do Lobo, as part of the Polis development programme for the Ria Formosa, continue to cause controversy (see Algarve Resident August 20 edition).

Isabel Mealha, owner and manager of Izzy’s Beach Restaurant, told the Algarve Resident this week: “This is a very serious situation. We have no certainty about the future of our restaurant. The only thing we know is that the highest bidders will have one of the new restaurants that are going to be built.

“The restaurants cannot cease to exist because each one has their own specific characteristics. Many people come here not for the beach but for the restaurants.”

She added: “All restaurants are doing petitions so that the beauty of this area is not destroyed. These are typical restaurants with distinct features. We are also thinking about going ahead with an online petition.”
