More than 500 guests from all regions of Portugal attended a Garden Party hosted by the British Ambassador Jill Gallard at the Ambassador’s Residence in Lisbon on Tuesday in honour of the Birthday and Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
The Ambassador spoke very positively, in Portuguese and English, of the concerted effort being made by Portugal to reduce its budget deficit.
She also remarked on the importance of the alliance between Britain and Portugal, dating back to the Treaty of Windsor in 1386. HM Queen Elizabeth II has made several visits to Portugal and the gathering lustily sang the National Anthem accompanied by the Portuguese Navy Band.
Jill Gallard then proposed a toast to Her Majesty and the President of Portugal. There was much to keep everyone entertained plus a superb selection of regional cuisine and drinks.
Graham’s Port even treated the guests to a tasting of their 1952 vintage port!
