A gang accused of attempting to defraud a jewellery shop in Carvoeiro after they tried to pay for goods worth more than 56,000 euros with a fraudulent cheque are now missing.
The three con artists (see the Algarve Resident December 26) were arrested in connection with the incident on December 20 and appeared in court in Portimão on December 22 where they were ordered to report to Lagoa GNR station every Saturday as part of their bail conditions.
A GNR spokesman confirmed to the Algarve Resident that the fraudsters initially reported to the station but they have not been back again this year and it is suspected that they could have fled the country.
The case will now be referred back to the courts in Portimão once again, where a judge will decide if an international arrest warrant should be issued for the three suspects.
