A branch of the Crédito Agricola bank in Alcantarilha has become the latest target for cash machine thieves in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A gang stole a JCB digger from a nearby construction site before smashing the front of the bank at around 3am in the town centre.
Although the bank window was completely smashed, the robbers were unable to steal the money from the ATM machine, which was left damaged on the floor, while the JCB was abandoned nearby.
Local people, who were awoken in the night, called the GNR who arrived at the scene of the crime to take evidence.
A GNR spokesman told the Algarve Resident on Wednesday that police had not yet made any arrests and investigations were ongoing.
