Gala of jazz

The Sheraton Algarve Hotel has recently revealed who will be performing at this year’s grand summer gala, scheduled for August 8. Al Jarreau, winner of five Grammy Awards and the only singer in history who received a Grammy Award in three different music categories – jazz, pop and R&B (soul) – will be there. He recorded several hit albums throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s and has just released a new album – Accentuate the Positive – earlier this year.

“After George Benson, Dionne Warwick and Gloria Gaynor, we bring with Al Jarreau another exciting and world-class performer to the Algarve. The summer gala has become a tradition and, with yet another international artist, we confirm our commitment to quality entertainment,” says Guido De Wilde, general manager of the Sheraton Algarve Hotel and area manager of Starwood Hotels and Resorts.

As well as this talented star performing at the Sheraton annual gala, Angelique Kidjo will open the Algarvian summer season with a performance on July 17. African-born Angelique Kidjo is a gifted vocalist whose work has resulted in three Grammy nominations. Her musical style is a unique blend of afro-funk, reggae, samba, salsa, gospel, jazz and soul. Inspired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Arethra Franklin, Angelique Kidjo was singing professionally by her twentieth birthday and recorded her first album Pretty in 1980.

Throughout her career, Angelique Kidjo has worked with various international artists like Santana and Gilberto Gil. She sings her songs in English, French and the African languages Yoruba and Fon.
