ONE OF the most futuristic speed boats in the world, The Earthrace, jetted into Lisbon’s Alcântara Docks last week.
The state-of-the-art boat was in Lisbon as part of a campaign to raise awareness over environmental issues.
Built in New Zealand, Earthrace only uses bio fuels produced from sustainable sources, in this case bio diesel, and will try next year to establish a new world record for circumnavigating the globe in a power boat.
The vessel is 20 metres long and eight metres wide with a 10 tonne displacement. With its lightweight Kevlar and fibreglass construction, its 540 horse power motors can power the boat to a maximum speed of 45 knots (90 km/h), while its fuel tanks can hold 10,000 litres of bio diesel, sufficient enough to travel 6,000 km without refuelling.
After staying in Lisbon on Monday and Tuesday, the boat then headed for the Algarve.
