Trade in cat and dog fur has been outlawed in all 27 EU member states and it is hoped that this latest measure will put pressure on China to curb the killing of the animals for their fur.
More than two million dogs and cats are killed annually in China for their skins and many consumers buy products with real fur unwittingly as exporters often attach false labels.
The ban mirrors similar legislation already in force in Australia and the US.
