The Algarve tourism board (ERTA) has offered financial support for the refurbishment of Silves cathedral, which is due to start in the near future.
António Pina, President of the ERTA, said: “The Algarve tourism board is delighted that all of the necessary conditions are in place to start the work and to be a part of the solution that was found for the cathedral.
“We want the cathedral to be restored and able to be visited as quickly as possible.”
According to the ERTA, the building is the best example of gothic architecture in the region and is one of the most sought after monuments by tourist, and visitors to the Algarve, despite its deteriorated state.
