Funding freeze

BULGARIA HAS been stripped of 220 million euros of funding by the European Commission because of its failure to tackle corruption and organised crime.

More than 500 million euros of funding was frozen In July, following a damming report.

The EU Commission has now confirmed that Bulgaria, the EU’s newest and poorest member state, will definitely lose almost half that amount.

This measure is meant to show that the EU is not squandering taxpayers’ money and to warn potential new members that corruption will not be tolerated.
