Fund-raising event to help horse rescue charity

A charity event to raise funds for the Their Voice Portugal association, which rescues abused and abandoned horses throughout the country, will be taking place at Monte da Ribeira, between Loulé and Salir on September 15.

A fun-packed day has been planned in order to attract visitors with a wide selection of performances, games, auctions and other activities from 11am to 5pm.

The idea came from Sherry Saunders, a member of an Algarve-based horse-lovers group, called “The Desperate Horsewives”.

The group visited Their Voice’s facilities in Caldas da Rainha and witnessed the arduous work Sharon Clark, the head of the association, has been developing against all odds. Afterwards, it was decided that they would help out by organising a fund-raising event.

Sharon told the Algarve Resident that Their Voice focuses mainly on the recuperation and homing of disadvantaged horses and has already relocated numerous animals to new homes in Germany, Austria and other European countries.

At the moment, the association is caring for almost 40 horses.

“We rely solely on donations and with bills piling up and our facilities, which are requiring renovations and expansions, not equipped to take in so many horses, it is becoming harder to take care of these animals,” she said.

However, Sharon remains confident in her efforts and said she willbe meeting a member of the World Horse Welfare this week in order to alert them to the problems experienced in Portugal.

Entry to the charity event will cost €5, while children under the age of 12 may enter for free.
