Fun in Portimão

Summer entertainment in Portimão includes everything from culture and history to gastronomy and sport, in a bid to appeal to people of all ages.

Portimão Museum is inviting visitors to the city to get to know its heritage through a permanent exhibition entitled Portimão – territory and identity, while the Submerged Art exhibition running until August 31 displays photography works under the sea.

The World Press Photo comes to the city’s riverside area from August 4 to 28 and is expected to impress with the best in photojournalism.

The Micro Safari event is the largest exhibition of live animals from the five continents in Portugal, with more than 100 species on show, and can be visited until August 21 at the Portimão Arena.

If you’re looking for good summer books at reasonable prices, take a walk along the riverside to find the Book Fair running until August 21.

For foodies, there’s plenty to do this summer in Portimão. Start with the Allgarve Gourmet event, which is taking place today (Friday) and tomorrow, when renowned chefs meet up at the Portimão Museum to create truly unique fish dishes.

From August 5 to 15, it’s time for the Sardine Festival on the riverside area, which will include plenty of live entertainment and concerts from Portuguese artists such as Dulce Pontes, Áurea, Mickael Carreira and Trovante.

A little to the west in Mexilhoeira Grande, an arts and gastronomy event on August 20 and 21 will showcase typical sweets and local crafts.

Still on the subject of food, in Figueira, the famous Cockle Festival is on September 10 and 11.

To get everyone fit this summer, several sporting activities are available at Praia da Rocha until August 31. Head for the beach to practice volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and much more on the sports area. The Mundialito Beach Football will be held in the same location from August 10 to 12 seeing the national teams from Portugal, France, Brazil and Mexico compete.

From September 9 to 11, the International Showjumping Competition takes place at the Belmonte riding centre.

A popular highlight in the Portimão summer events programme is the concert by British band Human League, who are presenting their new album Credo, in Praia da Rocha on August 4.

For shoppers looking for a bargain, don’t miss the StockOut Retail Fair between August 25 and 28 along the riverside area.

Motorsport lovers should look out for the Motorsport Vodafone – National Motorcycling Championship at the Algarve Race Track on August 20 and 21, while from September 16 to 18 it’s the turn of the International GT Open.
