Vila da Luz Bowls Club is to open for play on September 20 with an inaugural open pairs competition being planned to enable as many people as possible to sample the new green.
Located behind the Valverde Restaurant on the old road to Luz, this new club is all about the members and the costs of creating a green have been met entirely by them.
The playing surface and surrounding walkways have been laid to World Bowls specifications and have been levelled with the aid of laser beam technology to ensure perfection.
Greenguage, one of the leading suppliers of artificial playing surfaces in the UK, are due to begin the final stage of laying the surface on September 8 and with this process expected to take five days to complete, members are hopeful that they may be able to play even earlier than planned.
Meanwhile, the club logo in dark blue and gold, as designed by Absolute Zero in Porches, was chosen by members as it represents the sun, sea and sand of Luz and already shirts, hats and visors have been produced for members and visitors.
The club will be open seven days a week and bowlers and non bowlers are welcome, with loan bowls and appropriate footwear available.
