Fruit losses

Citrus and carob production in the Algarve this year is expected to drop by between 20% and 30%. Adverse weather conditions are to blame. The conclusion followed a report by the drought impact assessment group (Grupo de Acompanhamento e Avaliação dos Impactos da Seca) published this month.

Citrus production has been severely damaged by repeated frosts while carob production has been affected by the prolonged drought.  Citrus groves cover an area of around 11,000 hectares in the region, representing 70% of the total production in the country.
