With legal cases backed up into the distant future in Portuguese courts, law enforcement authorities are doggedly seeking out alleged corruption nonetheless. A new case “Frente e Verso” (front and back) got underway today with 40 search warrants executed in Lisbon, Loulé, Funchal and Póvoa de Varzim. What links these far flung locations? Suspected fraud in the obtaining of European subsidies, apparently. Focus appears to be on 19 projects approved under the Empreender 2020 programme, financed by the FEDER fund, say reports. Several millions of euros are at stake.
