Former Faro Mayor Macário Correia – forced to step down after months of legal wrangling last year – is now taking up a new position as head of ALGAR, the region’s rubbish disposal authority, writes Lusa news agency.
Correia was stripped of his mandate over planning irregularities (when he was Tavira Mayor) in 2012, but always maintained his innocence and refused to step down for months – eventually succumbing after losing various appeals.
His career in public office spans almost 30 years.
ALGAR is responsible for multi-municipal urban waste treatment and management, being financed by the Empresa Geral de Fomento (currently undergoing privatisation) and the Algarve’s 16 borough councils.
