Friends of music hold AGM

The Amigos de Música de São Lourenço Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on November 26 at the Centro Cultural São Lourenço, near Almancil, marking the 22nd AGM of the association.

Barry Shaw, the president, reported on the events of the previous year, which included a dinner at the Centro Cultural to celebrate the as- sociation’s 20th anniversary and also the Master Classes conducted by renowned British pianist Paul Crossley.

He told the members that they could look forward to such famous musicians as Sa Chen, Piers Lane and Katya Apiskisheva during the coming months.

The Master Classes were made possible by the sup- port of the foundation Mundo Crastino Meliori. Helga Hampton, vice president, co- ordinated the Master Classes which gave six young pianists from Portuguese conservatories the experience of learning from a true master.

One of those pianists, António Pedro Cebola, has since continued to have les- sons with Paul Crossley in London, co-sponsored by the Vale do Lobo Group of Companies and the Amigos, and gave a piano recital at the Vale do Lobo last month.

Michael Savage, the Honorary Treasurer, presented the accounts which were approved by the members present. All the offi cers of the Amigos’ committee retired and were re-elected for a further period of two years.

Pianist Joana Ballmann, who has been sponsored now for four years, gave her farewell concert at the Amigos AGM.

Joana, 24, will be graduating from the Cologne Conservatory in February 2011 with a BA in music. Her concert included music by Beethoven, Bach, Schumann, Ravel, Debussy as well as Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça.
