Painstaking work in a 16th century church in the Alentejan town of Alvalade has revealed an “important set of frescoes” that researchers have been looking for “for a very long time”.
The paintings have been hidden for decades by layers of limewash but now that they have been found, they will be minutely restored. For now, their dating remains a mystery.
All that can be confirmed is that it’s a “great find for the parish”.
