French boom

The number of French holidaymakers staying at Algarve hotels increased 35.8% last month compared to January 2017. Dutch and German visitors were also up, +8.2 and +4.2% respectively, which the number of Brits, however, fell 19.4%.

“The French market was once very important to the Algarve and is now regaining some of that importance, confirming the tendency of growth of recent years,” said Elidérico Viegas, president of hoteliers association AHETA which revealed the data.

Taking all tourists into account, the number of hotel bookings (35.7% occupation rate) fell 1% compared to the same month last year.
