There are 11 Covid-19 testing centres operating in the Algarve where residents can get free tests. They are located in Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira.
The testing centres were set up by the local councils, through the civil protection services, to respond to measures announced by the government which required that people present a negative Covid-19 test to access hotels, restaurants, casinos, and New Year’s Eve parties.
The government has since been forced into a U-turn over the kind of tests required for entry into restaurants and other activities. Now “self-tests” are allowed for entry into restaurants and other activities over the New Year (click here).
However, each resident is still entitled to six free Covid-19 tests (certified by a health professional) per month. All they have to do is go to a test centre and present their “Utente” number (health number).
Government-funded rapid antigen tests for residents are also available at pharmacies. To find a pharmacy or laboratory offering free testing near you, go to (click here)
