Fraudster’s trial over €1.2 million ‘cash diversion’ cancelled, thanks to judicial time limits

Convicted fraudster João Vale e Azevedo will be delighted to learn that in his absence (he skipped the country in a private jet last summer click here) a judge has decided that the trial scheduled for March over the disappearance of €1.2 million while he was still at the helm of Benfica football club has been cancelled, due to the fact that the case is ‘just too old’.

The wily conman still faces other legal issues, say reports – but if he stays away long enough, these too may well become null and void.

There remains a European Arrest Warrant out in Vale e Azevedo’s name, but no one appears to be betting on the chances of it being exercised.
