Fourteen municipalities in the Algarve, Portalegre and Santarém are at maximum danger of rural fires today, the day of the first reinforcement of firefighting resources around the country, in readiness for the peak summer season. The municipalities are Lagos, Portimão, Monchique, Silves, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira (in the Algarve), Portalegre, Marvão (Portalegre) , Chamusca, Constância, Vila Nova da Barquinha, Tomar and Ferreira do Zêzere (Santarém), according to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). Another 100 municipalities in the Algarve, Beja, Lisbon, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Viseu, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Vila Real and Bragança are facing very high fire danger of wildfires.
