As of this morning, there were four major fires being battled on national territory, in the districts of Guarda, Bragança, Aveiro and Santarém. Over 1,400 firefighters are involved with hundreds of appliances and varying numbers of air support. Climatologist Carlos da Câmara has been interviewed by SIC television today to say what most people have long since grasped: Portugal is a tinder box when it comes to fire risks, and we all have to take extreme care in activities, to ensure fires are not started accidentally (for rules in place under Situation of Alert see top story to come).
