Founder of Delta coffee dies, aged 91

Tributes are pouring in today for the life and work of hugely respected Portuguese businessman Rui Nabeiro, the founder of Grupo Nabeiro – Delta Cafés, who has died in hospital at the age of 91. Parliamentary leader Augusto Santos Silva has described Nabeiro as “one of the biggest and best Portuguese businessmen (…) very attentive to the rights of his workers” with obvious “love for Portugal and his land (…) He will remain in everyone’s memory”. A statement from the Nabeiro group, which undeniably leads the country’s coffee market, said: “The entire Delta family is deeply saddened by this loss and extends sincere condolences to all those who also lost a great friend today.” The group remains “committed to continuing (Rui Nabeiro’s) legacy and honouring his vision by continuing to produce the world’s best coffee, supporting local communities and promoting sustainability,” the statement added.
