The foundation stone for Portimão’s Sports Complex, which will include a football stadium, swimming pools and multipurpose pavilion, was laid on Tuesday.
Present at the ceremony were Portimão Mayor Manuel da Luz and António Barroca of the Lena Group, responsible for the construction, management and promotion of the Sports Complex, which represents an investment of 150 million euros and a total of 3,400 direct and indirect jobs.
The football stadium will have a capacity for 8,000 people and will include a congress centre as well as an exhibitions hall. The multipurpose pavilion will be used for gymnastics, handball, roller hockey, basketball and tennis, and will have a capacity for 3,160 people.
The municipal swimming pools will be geared up for major competitions with an Olympic-size pool and 1,400 audience capacity.
Portimão Mayor Manuel da Luz told the Algarve Resident: “There is more to life than the economic crisis. This project represents a huge challenge in a city that will be known for its top quality sporting facilities.”
