Forum Algarve to plant over 30,000 trees in fire-ravaged Monchique

Over 30,000 trees will be planted in Monchique following a joint campaign involving Forum Algarve shopping centre in Faro, Monchique council and the association of forest producers from the Western Algarve (ASPAFLOBAL).

The project will be funded with proceeds from Forum’s Christmas ice rink, and each ticket that was sold will equal a tree planted in Monchique. The reforestation initiative will see ‘medronheiros’ (strawberry trees), cork oaks, pine and chestnut trees being planted in an area covering 250,000sqm.

Sérgio Santos, director of Forum Algarve, said the campaign was a success and exceeded all expectations.

“Through this initiative, we were also able to raise awareness among children and youngsters about the importance of looking after our forests, respecting the environment and protecting nature,” he said.

The shopping centre’s Christmas Village also promoted a children’s book called ‘Gui vai acampar’, focusing on forest preservation.
