Renovations at the São Sebastião Fort in Castro Marim will commence in October, following the recent allocation of public funding by the Câmara. The battlements will take a year to be restored, in a project estimated to cost more than 900,000 euros.
The São Sebastião fort was built in 1641, by order of D. João IV, to ensure better defence of the area, and served as an important strategic military base throughout various wars. The Câmara believe that this is an important project, worth investing in to rekindle a sense of pride with regard to the history of the area.
