Kimi Raikkonen finally claimed a well deserved pole position on the tarmac with Jenson Button, championship leader Alonso and Fisichella starting in second, third and fourth. Michael Schumacher was just behind in fifth.
Raikkonen was 10s. up on his field when transmission failure put him out of the race after 36 laps. Once again, it was Alonso who took full advantage, taking the chequered flag ahead of Montoya and Britain’s Jenson Button.
