Families of miners who put their lives at risk working in the Urgeiriça uranium mines in the Beira Alta are now threatening the government with legal action. It is not due to health issues, but the government’s inaction over rehabilitating up to 50 homes constructed with radioactive materials.
The decontamination of the homes should have gone ahead “a long time ago”, explains TSF radio, saying families want answers, or else they will be forced to seek legal representation.
The mines have an extraordinary history, recently explained in a bi-lingual documentary by British filmmaker Ramsay Cameron, who won an award for his work at last year’s CineEco Festival in Seia (click here).
