Former PSD leader Maria Ferreira Leite has given a withering assessment of Portugal’s prospects, unless things change, radically and swiftly. Talking today at an event for International Women’s Day she said Portugal is headed to becoming the ‘Alentejo of Europe’ – “dead and without life”: a nice place to go for a holiday/ very pretty/ sunny/ lovely food, but completely lacking in people and direction. Ms Ferreira Leite impressed the need to turn around the ‘demographic winter’ – a necessity that has been sounded by countless others in the past.
