Former President of Portugal Mário Soares hospitalised

Mário Soares, a former President of Portugal, was admitted to hospital in Lisbon last weekend, suffering from a persistent flu.

According to his doctors, he was in stable condition. Soares, 88, was the first prime minister elected after the 1974 Revolution in Portugal.

Ever since his presidency in the 90s, Soares has been a constant figure as a commentator on the political scene. As a Socialist member, he has constantly criticised the current government for its austerity measures
