Former PM António Guterres’ candidacy for the UN’s top job is “imperative”, says government

The Portuguese government has formalised its endorsement for the candidacy to the UN’s top job of former PS prime minister and UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres. According to a statement, the government considers Guterres’ nomination as UN secretary-general, replacing Ban Ki-moon, “imperative in a time in which, more than ever, it is urgent to mobilise the world on behalf of peace and safety, human rights and sustainable development”.
