Orlando Figueira described himself as 'stupified' when he received his sentence in 2018. He has been fighting against it ever since.

Former magistrate accepts jail, only to be released after three days

Orlando Figueira finally accepted his six year eight month jail term for corruption, after years of legal challenges, on Friday evening, only to be released on the basis that he had been right when he argued there was still an appeal inching its way through the system. Portugal’s Supreme Court has today agreed with him: an appeal was lodged in May and it hasn’t yet been decided upon. Mr Figueira has been released, and will now wait and see if he has to return to jail, or if this final appeal is successful.
