Emilio Ballack, the 18-year-old son of former German footballer Michael Ballack, has been killed in a quad bike accident in Portugal.
Authorities have confirmed the accident happened at around 2.10am this morning at the Villas do Mar condominium near the family’s holiday home in Tróia (Grândola), south of Lisbon.
Emergency services were called but efforts to revive the young man at the scene were unsuccessful. His death was declared on the spot and his body taken to the legal medicine office of Hospital do Litoral Alentejano in Santiago do Cacém.
Michael Ballack is said to have purchased the holiday home where he was staying with his family several years ago.
He is regarded as one of the best German footballers of his generations, having played for top clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Chelsea FC.
The English club has lamented the footballer’s son’s death on its Twitter page.
“Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Ballack at the terribly young age of 18,” the statement read.
“All our thoughts are with his father Michael and his family at this sad time.”
