The Algarve’s ‘Forgotten Food’ Festival is approaching its end with its last “charm picnic” which will take place at 10.30am on Saturday, September 12 in Cacela Velha.
Say organisers, these picnics aim to “recreate the eating habits of the mid 20th century when many Algarvians would gather for picnics”.
The picnics start with a small walk to the picnic site where participants will enjoy a special meal made by a chef using local ingredients. To ensure non-Portuguese speakers can enjoy the experience just as much as locals, an English translator is also present.
Musical performances featuring the Algarve’s “symbolic instrument”, the accordion, are also among the highlights of the picnics.
But safety has not been forgotten. According to organisers, the picnics have been “changed and adapted in order to respect all the guidelines from the national health board (DGS) and ensure the safety of everyone while still maintaining their identity and essence”.
Seats will be reserved and assigned beforehand and guests will be seated in different picnic blankets according to the groups that are attending together in order to ensure social distancing.
The use of face masks is mandatory on arrival and during the check- in, but not during the meals.
The festival will come to a close on October 17 in Querença, Loulé with a massive party featuring live music, a market selling regional produce, an exhibition and much more.
Tickets cost €20 for adults and €10 for children between the ages of seven and 14 and must be purchased online in advance at https://qrer.bol.pt/.
The ‘Forgotten Food’ Festival aims to shine the spotlight on traditional products that are disappearing from our tables because they are “associated with poverty or have lost their agricultural value”.
It is one of the headlining events of the region’s ‘365 Algarve’ cultural programme, devised to improve the region’s cultural agenda outside of the summer season. This year, however, it was extended into the summer season due to the pandemic.
