As we approach the critical wildfire period, a number of seminars to raise awareness about forest fire prevention have been announced by the Safe Communities Algarve Association, in collaboration with the civil protection agency and the GNR.
Preventing and dealing with forest fires involves a number of agencies, which are coordinated by the civil protection agency (ANPC).
The GNR, through their specialist unit SEPNA, also have a vital role to play when it comes to environment protection issues – including dealing with animal cruelty cases – and the GIPS, who deal with emergency situations such as fighting fires, natural disasters and the evacuation and rescuing of victims, are also instrumental.
The seminars in English are thus aimed at informing residents, particularly those living in rural areas, about the work of these agencies and offer attendees the opportunity to speak to the experts involved and view some of the emergency equipment.
Captain Santos, Commander of GNR Faro, will be present along with GNR specialist units and their Safe Residence Programme team as well as ANPC personnel. Details of the events, which are free to enter, are as follows:
– Tuesday, May 20 from 5pm to 7pm at the Freguesia de Santa Bárbara de Nexe, located at Rua da Junta de Freguesia 8, Santa Bárbara de Nexe
– Thursday, May 22 from 5pm to 7pm at the Museu do Trajo do Algarve, Rua Dr José Dias Sancho 61, São Brás de Alportel
– Friday, May 30 from 4pm to 6pm at the Junta de Freguesia de Monchique – Rua D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar, 8.
David Thomas from SCA said: “I would advise everyone to attend these events as it will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about civil protection planning and dealing with natural disasters including fires – which could affect your property.”
