A 66-year old Swedish woman died on Saturday after she was swept away by flood water from a river that had burst its banks due to heavy rain.
According to Portuguese daily newspaper Correio da Manhã, the victim lived in Sítio dos Joios near São Marcos da Serra in Silves council.
It is reported that she and her husband were returning from a farewell party of a friend when they tried to cross a bridge that gives access to their house.
It was submerged and the car was dragged off by the strength of the water.
It is said that the woman was frightened, got out of the car and was swept away by the water. Her body was later found some 200 metres from the car.
A spokesman from the Swedish Embassy in Portugal told the Algarve Resident: “We were informed by the husband of the victim about the tragic accident. The Embassy is in contact with him. Due to Swedish regulations, we are not in a position to inform about proceedings in the case.”
