afpop, Portugal’s largest foreign residents’ association, has been asked to support the new look Sardine Festival in Portimão this year and help attract more foreign residents to the event.
In the first initiative of its kind between a local authority and the association, afpop said it was delighted to have been invited by Portimão Urbis to help promote the popular Algarve festival.
The Commercial and Events Director of Portimão Urbis, Dra Mariana Vasconcelos, said: “This year we have revamped the image and feel of the Sardine Festival and also looked at new ways to promote it.
“An important area for us is to encourage more foreign visitors to the festival. As we enjoy working with afpop on their Better Living in Portugal (BLiP) exhibition each year, it made sense to ask them to help us promote our festival to the foreign resident community.”
afpop CEO Michael Reeve said: “We are delighted to have been approached to be a partner organisation in this event, which will include many aspects of Portuguese life and history that we think are important for the foreign residents to know a little about.
“afpop members will receive a discount on the entry fee by use of a voucher that we will be issuing shortly and we hope that our members and their friends will visit us at the festival and enjoy being part of the fun of the festival.”
The Sardine Festival runs each evening from August 3 to 11 and will take place at the Exhibitions and Fairs Park in Portimão.
Events will begin each day with a parade from Portimão Museum, where the sardines were once brought ashore by the fishermen and processed, and will proceed along the riverfront to the festival site. The parade will be led by the famous Portuguese theatre group CHAPITÔ, who will entertain festival-goers along the route.
